What is Deep Contact?
‘Deep Contact’ has developed over ten years from a natural culmination of dance, art, somatics practice and studies.
The main focus is on evolving research around the meeting of Contact Improvisation dance and Buto dance compositions, also with the influence of certain massage techniques and of yoga even tantra.
‘Group Deep Contact’ is the name for group performance guided by Carey Jeffries. It is also the name of this site.
Present areas of investigation 2018/19
A recent area in development is that of a slow but intelligent crushing massage, taking time to apply and maintain body weight on a partner waiting for an opening and release of deep tissue tonus and then giving multi-directional expansions . After which we can move in to slow a dep contact dance.
Another theme investigated are sessions exploring the influence of art, on the dancing body, or alternatively changing roles of drawing the contact dancers movement, and then dancing in contact and being drawn by others. How this changes one’s dance and brings us towards a state of deep contact, how drawing composition can also influence the composition in our dance
All these elements can be adapted for teaching in a group or workshop or laboratory situation, for performance projects as well as sessions for healing and well being.
